Whew! It's been nearly a year since we entered any news, and yet all this time it's been news, news, news. We've seen many of our friends and fans over this past 9 months. We've had our busiest times this past year. And, this winter, we had a difficult period with illness - much vocal distress. Spring seems to be pulling us back into focus. Plans for our next CD are back in motion. We're looking forward to our summer productions with Ohio Valley Summer Theater.

We promise to enter more current information here so you know what's happening when you sign on and visit our site. As always, we are grateful for your attention and devotion, and we look forward to seeing you sometime soon.

I hadn't really planned to be doing OVST this Summer, but sometimes things sweep you along in directions other than you intended.

It's a great show to be part of and I would encourage any and all of you to attend one of the performances if you are able. See our upcoming events page to learn more about it.

The new CD is in the planning stages, but we hope to begin initial recordings of some of the songs in August.

I need to get back to work now, I'll let you all know how and when things develop.

We hope you are all having a great Summer!!

--Charlie

. . . and we're glad it doesn't.

We've just returned from the Cleveland performances at Cain Park with David Budin and Long Road. It was a great show to be part of and it now appears we will be doing it again in Willoughby, Ohio in August.

Other things are in the works as well and we are going to be very busy the rest of the Summer--we need to update our calendar so you can all see what we mean--promise to get that in place in the next couple of days.

We had planned to take a little time to work on a new CD, but find we are easily pulled into other projects that prevent it from happening. This month is no different as Charlie has now agreed to fill in a vacancy in the cast of "The Secret Garden" for the Ohio Valley Summer Theater. Originally the plan was for Charlie to put together the material for the proposed CD while Celia was performing in the orchestra for this OVST production. Daughters Emma and Helen are also involved, so it has turned out to be something of a family affair.

Now the available time to plan for the CD has been pushed back to August at the earliest. Hopefully, we can still get it put together this year. We'll keep you posted on our progress as we go along.

Hope you're having a great Summer and hope to see you at one of our performances.

What’s that? Summer 2007????

Okay, it has been a while since we posted any “news”. It actually surprises me to see this as we have clearly been very busy---busy with everything except updating our news page.

Last Summer saw many things, including the long awaited reunion of the Frogwhompers. The Green Parks album that was sold in the 1970’s was released on CD for the first time with some dandy previously unreleased bonus tracks featuring the 1976 touring group. The more or less complete Frogwhompers recorded material was released in an “unboxed” set featuring over 50 cuts. I believe both of theses items are currently out of stock everywhere, but I’m sure they will soon return and will send out a notice as well as posting it here when I get confirmation on this.

This Summer is starting to shape up and includes participation in Folk concerts at Cain Park in Cleveland and the possibility for another later in the Summer or Fall in the Zanesville area. As this develops, we will let you know on the details.

We continue to appear around the region and are beginning to take a serious look at finally beginning to record a new CD - - thanks to all of you that have been requesting it.

Watch this space. I’ll do my best to post current news in this spot as it unfolds.

In the meantime, check out our Upcoming Events page to see what we are up to at any given moment.

Charlie

A few words from Matthew Griffin . . .

The Hills of Ohio was written on the bus on the way to Cleveland one morning. We had to leave from the school of theater at some ungodly hour in the middle of the night to get to a morning performance in Cleveland. Anne Smith, Marsha Pierson and I were the unlucky slobs who didn't manage to find enough space to stretch out and snooze. If we'd had a bigger bus, that song might not have gotten written.

Anyway -- there we were -- upright and awake and with several hours to kill. Anne says, "I've had this tune going around in my head and Bob wants more Ohio songs in the show. Let's see if we can do something with this." So she plays the tune through on her guitar and dee-dee-dees instead of words. I think the first line we came up with was "At night I dream of Athens County" which we ended up changing to "I often dream of Athens County". By the time we got off the bus, the song was finished.

We were staying in the Area that afternoon in cabins at a state lodge -- this might have been Geauga County for the Maple Festival -- I'm not sure. But anyway -- that afternoon Bob & Connie had driven up to meet us and have some touch up rehearsal in the living room of one of our cabins. We played them the song, added some back up vocals; Alex took a fiddle break which eventually became a dynamite mandolin duet with Alex and John. We put the song in the show that night.

I remember when we played that song at the Athens County Fairgrounds on July 4th, the crowd stood and applauded and stomped their feet until Bob made us sing it all the way through a second time. It was one of the greatest moments of my life.

Years later when I was in graduate school a fellow contacted me and wanted to record the song. He sent me a recording he had made at a live performance in the park in my hometown of Gallipolis. I never got Anne's permission to let him record it but he submitted the tape to the Ohio Country Music Association. Imagine my surprise when I got a letter from OCMA telling me that "The Hills of Ohio" had been selected as the best new song of 1985. They were supposed to send me a plaque but it never showed up.

I'd like to thank Matthew for sharing the story behind this song with us. If you click on our music link, you will hear part of this song at the beginning of the Green Parks Montage. If you would like to hear it all, you can now purchase a copy of the CD. Our "shopping" page has a link that takes you directly to the order page of OVST.

Be sure to check out the photo gallery to see some photos and press from the 1976 tour group.

There's more to come -

Charlie

The first performance of the Appalachian Green Parks Project in over
30 years is nearly upon us.

This Thursday evening, March 29, at ARTS/West in Athens, Ohio brings
the Gala Kick-off of the 2007 OVST (Ohio Valley Summer Theater) Summer
Season. The performers for this evening include original Green Parks
members Bruce and Gay (Gehres) Dalzell, Bill Mullins, Charlie and
Celia, plus Bob & Connie (House) Winters who were, and still are,
major creative forces behind this entire project from way back in 1973
to the present day.

Featured guests include Jerry Rockwell, a wizard on the
Appalachian/Mountain Dulcimer, Bill Mullins, multi-instrumentalist par
excellence, as well as Jim Prouty & Terry Douds, both former members
of the "Frogwhompers" and "A Touch of Grass." We are also privileged
to feature some offspring of the aforementioned folks!

Rehearsals are underway and we'll likely post a few photos on our
website as soon and as often as possible as rehearsals and
performances take place.

If you go to our Music link, you can listen to a montage of some of
the songs recorded by the various incarnations of the Appalachian
Green Parks Project. If you remember the group, it will bring back
memories. If you are new to the group, it will give you a taste of
what you can expect in concert this week and for a solid week in July
when even more of the original members will be in town to recreate the
music after our 30 year break. You will currently find some press
clippings from the past and a couple advertising the current event on
our photo page, but these may begin to change rapidly as we post
current day pictures along with those of 30 years ago.

How can you be a part of all this? I'm glad you asked.

There will be four shows this week:

Thursday, March 29, starting at 6:30 p.m.:

The Gala Season Kickoff - tickets are $20 each, as this is a
fundraiser, and the higher cost includes a reception featuring local
wines and finger foods starting at 6:30 p.m. This gives you a chance
to mingle and talk with members of the troupe as well as OVST Board
Members. Heck, you will even be able to pick up a season subscription
to all the shows going on at OVST this year. Then, the concert begins
at 8:00 p.m.

Friday, March 30 and Saturday, March 31, 8:00 p.m.: The evening
concert continues into the weekend -- tickets are $10 each.

Sunday, April 1, 3:00 p.m.: Matinee performance, family friendly.
Each $10 ticket entitles the bearer to one free child admission.
There will be puppets and singing games along with some of the pieces
from the evening concerts.

Should you decide you'd like to attend, please let us know via email.
We'll make sure a ticket is awaiting you at ARTS/West. As always, we
want to express our appreciation for your appreciation of the live
performing arts. Whether you are able to join us this weekend or not,
please forward this information along to others that you think might
be interested. The Appalachian Green Parks Project visited many, many
locations in Southeastern Ohio and throughout the state during our
country's Bicentennial, and those who saw the group then may want to
have this opportunity to see it again. We have heard from several
folks already who remember bringing their children to a show in the
1970's! We hope we'll meet those children and their children this
time around.

Looking forward to seeing you -

Charlie & Celia

Mark it on your calendar.

Thursday the 29th is a Gala event and fund raiser. It will no doubt be a fun evening and will include Bill Mullins, Bruce & Gay Dalzell and Charlie & Celia.

If you miss that, catch us either of the next two evenings with some local friends or on Sunday afternoon at 3 for a fun family event.

This will be a good way to get a sneak peek at what will be coming this Summer when past members will be arriving from all over the country to re-create the magic of those 70's Summers.

I'll let you know details as they become more clear in the next week or so.

--Charlie

If you keep checking back here, you will find updates on the impending reunion of the Appalachian Green Parks Project coming this summer to Athens, Ohio. It will be a part of the 2007 Season of the Ohio Valley Summer Theater and will feature appearances by a good many of the original members.

Before that however, there will be a kickoff of the season in a concert at ARTS/West that will feature some of the former members who live more or less locally and a few of our friends. As soon as I have the total line up available, I will post it here with who will be appearing when. So far, I have commitments from Bruce and Gay Dalzell, Bill Mullins and of course Celia and I will be there.

There will be four separate shows and not all members will appear in all four shows, so check in here to see who will appear on which dates.

I do know the Thursday evening concert will be a fund raiser/gala opening of the season and that both Friday and Saturday will be aimed at those folks who want to go out for to see and evening concert while the Sunday afternoon show will be family oriented.

With any luck, there will be a number of special guests who touched or were touched by the Green Parks Project also making appearances and perhaps contributing a bit to the festivities.

The OVST Board members will be present and subscriptions for the season will be available for the entire season which will include the summer Green Parks shows plus productions of Wait Until Dark and the 50th anniversary special production of the Music Man.

Oh, and I have changed some of the photos posted of the Green Parks Project . . . check them out.

More to come . . . .

Charlie

I have been busy contacting as many former members as possible, but have also been collecting memorabilia for the upcoming events. You have seen some of the photos on this website, and you will soon see new ones posted.

I have collected material from various sources and have come up with films, recordings, publicity and a lot of other nifty stuff.

One surprise was the recording we did at Mus-i-Col Studio on May 29 1975 with the group that features an early, unreleased recording of Gypsy Davey with Jim McGaw, Celia and me. There are other good items that will likely be bonus material on the re-release of the album on CD in the next month or so.

I will be converting all the audio and pictures to digital format in the next week or so and hope to have all the film/video transferred to DVD for our own convenience. At this point, I'm not sure any DVD material will be released to the public--that will likely depend on what kind of interest folks may have in such a thing.

I'll be back to post more later . . .

Charlie
